When to Freeze the Tavern in Battlegrounds (and When Not To)
Freezing the tavern is one of the most underused tools at lower ratings — and one of the cheapest ways to climb. This guide covers exactly how it works and the precise moments to use it.
How freeze actually works
When you freeze, the entire current shop is held over to your next turn instead of being replaced. Click the button again to unfreeze. Rerolling clears the freeze and gives you a fresh shop.
One crucial interaction: leveling the tavern does not refresh the shop (only rerolling does). That means you can freeze a great shop and still upgrade on the same turn — the frozen minions will be waiting for you next turn. Many guides get this wrong, so remember it.
The three times you should freeze
1. You're one piece away from a triple
If you can see the second or third copy of a minion but can't buy it this turn, freeze it. Securing the triple next turn is worth far more than a random new shop — a triple also Discovers a higher-tier minion, effectively borrowing a tavern level.
2. Good minions you can't afford
The shop is full of pieces you want, but you don't have the gold. Freeze, and pick them up next turn with more gold instead of losing them forever.
3. To rescue leftover gold
You leveled or otherwise have odd gold you can't spend, and the shop has value. Freeze it so that gold effectively carries into next turn through the held minions. (Remember: gold itself never carries over.)
When NOT to freeze
- The current shop has nothing for you, and you want to dig for a tribe, a triple, or a specific minion. Roll instead.
- Freezing out of habit is a real leak. Each turn, consciously choose: dig (roll) or hold (freeze)?
Freeze and reroll are two sides of the same coin
Think of freeze as a way to move good offers forward in time, and rerolling as a way to search for something better now. Strong players are deliberate about which one they're doing and why. If you're not sure, ask: "Is there anything here worth keeping?" If yes and you can't buy it all, freeze.
Takeaway
Freeze when you're one off a triple, when you can't afford good minions, or to save odd gold — and you can still level on the same turn. Don't freeze on autopilot. Used well, it's free value every lobby.
